All young people need help to make progress through their learning and to prepare for adult life. They will benefit from a planned programme of activities to help them make decisions, choose 14-19 pathways that are right for them and plan their careers both in school and after they leave. We provide a programme of careers education and provide impartial careers information, advice and guidance. It is very important to us to know that all leavers, whether at the end of Year 11 or Year 13, have an appropriate plan in place for their next steps.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nOur careers programme is overseen by our Careers and Higher Education Advisor who is responsible for leading careers education. against the eight Gatsby Benchmarks, a framework across schools in the UK.<br><br>\n\n1. A stable careers programme<br><br>\n\nEvery school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by students, parents\/carers, teachers and employers.<br><br>\n\n2. Learning from careers and labour market information<br><br>\n\nEvery student and their parents\/carers should have access to good-quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make best use of available information.<br><br>\n\n3. Addressing the needs of each student<br><br>\n\nStudents have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each student. A school\u2019s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.<br><br>\n\n4. Linking curriculum learning to careers<br><br>\n\nAll teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. For example, STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.<br><br>\n\n5. Encounters with employers and employees<br><br>\n\nEvery student should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment, and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.<br><br>\n\n6. Experiences of workplaces<br><br>\n\nEvery student should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and\/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.<br><br>\n\n7. Encounters with further and higher education<br><br>\n\nAll students should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.<br><br>\n\n8. Personal guidance<br><br>\n\nEvery student should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a careers adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. The programme includes lessons based on career planning, self-evaluation, making decisions, economic well-being and employability skills and is delivered through the STEPs Careers Programme and Unifrog in PSHE lessons. Careers education for Years 7 - 13 is mainly delivered through the PSHE curriculum, consisting of a one-hour lesson every week.<br><br>\n\nSTEPS Careers Programme<br><br>\n\nThe Step Series is a complete careers programme consisting of individual student workbooks which take students through the stages of career planning from age 11, right through to planning post-18 options. The workbooks are progressive and are relevant to each age group. They cover a range of issues to help students to understand more about themselves, find out about careers and the world of work and help them to plan for their future.<br><br>\n\nUnifrog<br><br>\n\nThis online platform is well-used by students as it helps them make intelligent, well informed choices about their futures. Unifrog allows students to use data to decide which route to choose after school, help students avoid common decision-making mistakes and enable teachers to track where their students have got to in making their choices. Students can also compare individual university courses and apprenticeships, allowing them assess going to university alongside doing an apprenticeship. Mrs Tracy Fleming is our Careers and Higher Education Adviser, who arranges one-to-one interviews with students from different year groups.<br><br>\n\nFrom Year 10, students are able to have an individual careers appointment with Mrs Fleming. All Inclusion, ELL and Emirati students receive an appointment in Year 9 prior to making their (I)GCSE option choices. Other students may request an appointment or be referred by their Head of Year or Form Tutor.<br><br>\n\nAppointments are prioritised for students in Year 10 and 11 seeking advice and guidance on their next step pathways. At the meeting an action plan will be drawn up and a copy emailed to the student to help them move forward with their plans. In addition, students in Year 12 and Year 13 are offered the opportunity of a careers appointment and are supported with their UCAS\/CommonApp applications, including those for UK Early Entry and US Early Decision.
