Every classroom is a continuous hub of\u00a0feedback: verbal and non-verbal clues, self- and peer- assessment, pre- and end of unit assessment results, written next steps, etc. All\u00a0feedbackhowever is designed with the same intention;\u00a0to\u00a0positively impact a students\u2019 progress\u00a0to\u00a0allow them\u00a0to\u00a0meet and then further exceed their own potential.

A students\u2019 ability\u00a0to\u00a0receive\u00a0feedback\u00a0positively and use it\u00a0to\u00a0inform improvement can widely vary. Ensuring that a student can manage and receive this\u00a0feedback\u00a0positively is integral\u00a0tomaking exceeding progress and achieving\u00a0success. A teachers\u2019 ability\u00a0to\u00a0recognise the types of\u00a0feedback\u00a0a student responds\u00a0to\u00a0best is also a key factor\u00a0to\u00a0ensure that the\u00a0feedback\u00a0is both received positively and acted upon.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Two Harvard law professors, Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen, argue that identifying different kinds of\u00a0feedback\u00a0is a good place\u00a0to\u00a0start. Their book\u00a0Thanks\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving\u00a0Feedback\u00a0Well\u00a0<\/em>(2014) separates\u00a0feedback\u00a0into\u00a0three main sections:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    \r\n
  1. Teach students\u00a0to\u00a0reflect on their reactions\u00a0to\u00a0the three categories of\u00a0feedback.<\/li>\r\n
  2. Help students be proactive about how they ask\u00a0for\u00a0feedback.<\/li>\r\n
  3. Remind students which categories of\u00a0feedback\u00a0they will get or give on projects or assignments.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Developing their own abilities\u00a0to\u00a0self-assess\u00a0success\u00a0takes time but is a powerful learning skill. Routinely encouraging students\u00a0to\u00a0use these three skills\u00a0for\u00a0self-reflection can enable them\u00a0tobest utilise the\u00a0feedback\u00a0they receive:

    Appreciation:<\/strong>\u00a0Where were you most\u00a0successful? What improvements stand out?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Coaching:<\/strong>\u00a0How can your knowledge expand? Where does effort need\u00a0to\u00a0be increased or reassigned?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Feed-forward<\/strong>: What needs\u00a0to\u00a0change or stay the same\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0successful? How\u00a0does your behaviour need\u00a0to\u00a0change\u00a0to\u00a0align with the desired outcomes?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Try these questions at home\u00a0to\u00a0help develop your child\u2019s ability\u00a0to\u00a0self-assess upon their own\u00a0success. It can take time\u00a0to\u00a0encourage and teach them how\u00a0to\u00a0respond\u00a0to\u00a0feedback\u00a0but the positive effects are well worth the time!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
